Some documents require legalization for presentation in a foreign country.

There are two types of legalizations, Apostille and Authentication.

The legalization process varies depending on whether a document is being legalized to go to a country that is a member and or a part of the Hague Convention of 1961 or not a member or participating party of the Hague Convention of 1961.

The Hague Convention of 1961 was established to assist with the progressive of unification of the rules of private

international law. This referenced October 5th 1961 Hague Convention abolished the requirement of legislation for foreign public documents of the HCCH (Hague Convention on Private International Law) however, some documents do require legalization for presentation and use in a foreign country.

Apostille - In some states, only documents that are destined for a country that is a participating member of or a part of the Hague Convention of 1961 can receive the Apostille Authentication. Note, this is state specific as some states such as California only do Apostilles.
